The Engine and Transmission

I'm often asked "Which body part is the most important in the golf swing?"

The answer to this question could be compared to asking "Which is more important in your car... The Engine or the Transmission?"

Of course, both are equally important to the function of your car just as there is a specific combination of parts and sequence needed in the golf swing to produce quality shots.

In a car, the engine can be thought of the component that CREATES power and the tranmission the component that DELIVERS power.

Create an imbalance between the two and your car won't run very well.

Imagine a 550 Horsepower Corvette motor mated to the transmission from a Geo Metro.  Clearly, a collossal mis match which would result in a shredded drive train and a pretty ugly repair bill.

Likewise, if you focus all your attention in your golf swing to increasing body strength and flexibility without devoting at least some attention to your grip, hands, and forearms, your golf club will never be able to deliver the power from your body effectively.

The Engine The Transmission

In the golf swing, we can think of the core and torso of the body as being the engine and the hands, wrists, and grip as the transmission.

In this image, we can see how the upper body is loaded into the lower body generating the potential for a tremendous amount of rotational power in the downswing. The body has served as the "ENGINE" of the swing by generating rotational power. As the body begins to rotate into the impact area, the hands, arms, and club are responding to the body turn by "lagging" into the pre impact position ready to unleash the stored energy that the lag has produced. As the hands release the club into the impact area the speed increases dramatically due to the leverage produced from this lag and release process.  The hands have served as the "TRANSMISSION" of the swing by leveraging the power of the body into motion.

The Engine of the golf swing: BODY TURN - TORSO - CORE - TRUNK - LEGS

Work on strengthening and stretching exercises that promote overall strength. Yoga is a great exercise for any golfer desiring to increase strength, stamina, flexibility, and overall health.

The Transmission of the golf swing
: GRIP, HANDS, WRISTS, FOREARMS

Work on hand strengthening drills, wrist curls, rotational strengthening exercises.

Just like your car, you'll find that once you're able to match your ENGINE to your TRANSMISSION correctly in your golf swing, you'll discover more power with less effort than ever before!
